Biography

Andrew Nix was born in Tucson, Arizona, where he began playing violin at age 3. He has been heavily involved in Tucson's vibrant classical music scene ever since joining the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, later becoming concertmaster and soloing with the orchestra on the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Only a year after graduating from the youth orchestra, Andrew won a position in the Tucson Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Jose Luis Gomez, fulfilling a dream that he developed while watching the orchestra growing up. Since then, he has played a wide variety of symphonic and chamber orchestra repertoire ranging from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 to Fela Sowande’s African Suite, as well as filling in for Assistant Principal 2nd Violin and in the Tucson Symphony String Quintet.

Along with his job in the Tucson Symphony, Andrew studies violin under Professor Timothy Kantor at the University of Arizona and plays occasionally as concertmaster of the Arizona Symphony Orchestra. During his freshman year he developed a passion for audio and video editing, and alongside three of his colleagues produced a virtual recording of Margaret Brouwer’s ‘Demeter Prelude’ for string quartet, which won praise from the composer herself. He was subsequently hired to edit a multi-track recording for the Gabriel Del Orbe Violin Program in the Dominican Republic. He also continues to work as Orchestra Manager and Livestream Engineer for the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, where he takes pride in broadcasting performances to family members who cannot attend concerts in person.

This past summer, Andrew attended Meadowmount School of Music to study with former 2nd violinist of the Tokyo Quartet Kikuei Ikeda, as well as renowned pedagogue I-Hao Lee. While there, he performed chamber music for community outreach as well as public recitals on both violin and viola. Andrew hopes to study violin further with Professor Lee as a graduate student at DePaul University in Chicago, and eventually audition for the Chicago Civic Orchestra.
